Things are heating up here in Maycomb. I mean they’re all fine folks but when it gets down to it they can vicious sometimes. I’ve already had an encounter with the Old Sarum bunch in the middle of the night, imagine what they would of done to Tom if Scout didn’t arrive to make them realize what they’re doing. That they’re still people underneath that blanket of hate. Scout shouldn’t have to be mixed up in all this. She doesn’t understand yet, nor do I want this case make her grow up to quickly. Jem has been showing signs of maturity here and there but even he shouldn’t have to deal with all this. The whole town’s been infected with a disease that makes people turn into ugly things. Ordinary people, made into people willing to do harm or worse for a simple doubt. They tell me I’ve been raising my children wrong, that they should be structured into proper young adults. And if I don’t, they will somehow grow to be terrible people. Yet, they’re the ones showing the most civil attitude in the entire town. I can only hope that with the extra bit of freedom I give them that they can form their own opinions ‘bout things. Not just succumbing to Maycomb’s usual disease as most folks have. Soon I’ll be off to prepare my notes for the trial. God I hope that Tom at least has a fair chance at winning this thing. It’ll be pretty hard to shake the prior bias of the town before entering that room, but at least if the bias against Robinson enters through those doors, so will the bias against the Ewells. We got Dill here as well which I can’t quite tell if he may become a problem. Ideally Jem can keep Scout and him out of trouble while the trial goes on. Added trouble is the last thing we need right now.
