StoryCorps is an organization that has been dedicated to preserving interviews of people for others to listen to. The recordings are saved in the Library of Congress and allow future generations to hear their elders tell them stories even when they are gone. So why is StoryCorps important? For one, it preserves our culture in a variety of ways. Because of the fact that just about anyone can participate in an interview for StoryCorps, the interviews span a wide array of people, from rich to poor, old to young. What this does is makes sure that there are multiple perspectives to view things from, not just from one person's point of view. For example, if several people were all interviewing and talking about a certain event on StoryCorps, the fact that there are several different people means that one can view how that event affected everyone, not just one group of people. Often, the only remnants we have of our past are physical objects or writings. With StoryCorps, we can hear the voice and emotions of someone from the past and have them explain history in the way that they perceive it.
In the TED talk that my class watched in class, we saw David Isay, the creator of StoryCorps, say that everyone has a story to tell the world. The consensus was overwhelmingly similar, with everyone agreeing with this statement. Another important aspect of StoryCorps is that it is cheap and easy to participate in. Unlike documentary films which require casting, large amounts of money, and a crew, StoryCorps only requires two or more people, an assistant, and a booth. With the introduction of the StoryCorps app, even more people will gain the ability to share their story with the world and have it preserved forever at the Library of Congress. Never before have so many people had the ability to take the time for an interview about their experiences. While it seems like a simple act, interviews can help people realize things they would not have otherwise or appreciate the things they have the more they begin to talk about them. For example, interviewing with someone that you have hurt in the past can help you avoid making the same mistakes in the future as well as help the other person why you did such things, perhaps without even realizing it.
Overall, StoryCorps is a very beneficial organization that helps people everywhere share their stories and experiences for people now and in the future to learn and better themselves. It helps people become more forgiving of others, more knowledgeable about oneself, and more perceptive of the world as a whole. Without StoryCorps, a huge amount of people may have gone without their stories told and thus gone into depression or worse. Interviewing for StoryCorps with their families is the only thing that saved them from death. So in a sense, StoryCorps also forms another function as well, to help save people from hurting themselves.
